5. The pay of both the European and Chinese members

of the Force has several times been increased. For the Europeans

from $24.00 to the present pay and for Chinese(3rd. class) from

$7 to $13 and so on. While the pay of a Chinese Sergeant exceeds

to that of Indian Sergeant a sum of $2.50 per month. Since some

years the Indians have been allowed on account of exchange to

remit half of their actual pay to India at the rate of 44 cents

per Rupee but no actual pay is increased fer the Indians since

their Force is established in 1867. Good Conduct Badges have

also been granted to them since a few years but this system did

little good because their bonus money has been stopped and put

in for the badges while a bad character cannot get any badge

until he keeps himself clear of any report for 6 months. 3rd. class badge is 75 cents after 2 years, 2nd. class $1.28 after

5 years and lat. class $1.75 after 8 years.

Each member was allowed on the completion of 5 years service to receive his 3 months actual pay as bonus, but new this privilege is not allowed except the Jemadars,
